Pacific Northwest Life Sew Along Quilt

The Pacific Northwest Life Quilt Kit

Pacific Northwest Life Sew Along Quilt

Welcome to our exclusive collaboration with Lamb Farm Designs! We at RebsFabStash have long been great fans of Lamb Farm’s work and collections, and happily stock whatever we can in our store. So when the opportunity arose to work together on a quilt pattern celebrating our local home, we pounced!

The Pacific Northwest Life Quilt is exactly what it says on the tin. This quilt pattern is designed to evoke all the hallmarks of the Pacific Northwest. If you live here or have ever visited, you can attest to that! From the salmon to the deer, these are the symbols of this unique corner of the United States.

Fun fact: The traditionally-pieced log cabin in the middle is actually modeled after the home of the owner of RebsFabStash, Christy Randal!

This quilt is exclusive to RebsFabStash for the entirety of its block-of-the-month run, so you won’t see it anywhere else!

This quilt is inspired by life in the Pacific Northwest, where both RebsFabStash and Lamb Farm Designs are located. We included furry friends that you often spot in these areas: raccoons, salmon…even bears!

We love life in the Pacific Northwest, and this quilt is designed to share that love & joy with you all! You don’t need to be a Pacific Northwesterner to appreciate the beauty and design in this quilt.

Before You Get Started Quilting

A few things to remember before you dive into your new quilt:

1. Save your scraps! This is especially important if you're doing the block-of-the-month, as you'll be receiving fabric monthly. When the next month's fabric arrives, it will be all NEW fabric needed for the current blocks. If any block requires colors you already have, you will be expected to use the fabric from previous months. If anything goes wonky with your quilting and you need to get ahold of new or additional fabrics for your quilt, you're welcome to order more from our website or contact us directly if you need help.

2. Half-square triangles: When making your half-square triangles, you'll want to leave a scant quarter inch seam allowance

3. Pay attention to colors! The schedule often calls for multiples of the same block to be made in a single week (ie: The week of 10/16 calls for 2 Douglas firs). Don't assume that they're all identical! Look closely at the fabric lists for that month and you'll see that you may be making the same thing in different colors. (The Douglas firs at 10/16, for example, are actually two different trees -- One is "bright green" with a light trunk and the other is "medium green" with a dark trunk.)

What is a Block-of-the-Month Quilt?

Our Pacific Northwest Life collaboration with Lamb Farm Designs is a block-of-the-month quilt! This means we offer it as a subscription. You pay monthly, receiving the necessary fabrics for each month's blocks as you go. You will also receive a pattern book and additional inserts with guidance like pictures, tips and extra notes.

The idea of a block-of-the-month is that you'll follow the schedule set by the designer (in this case, Jennie Jo Lamb). To get that full "group quilting" feel, we also offer a private Facebook Group where you can collaborate, share pictures and make new friends! Each month both Lamb Farm Designs and our team here at RebsFabStash will also release some short video tutorials to help you with your blocks.

Can I order all the months' blocks at once?

Of course! You are welcome to purchase the full kit all at once rather than subscribing to the monthly deliveries. And whether you order the complete quilt kit or the block-of-the-month option, you are welcome to follow the sew-along or just quilt in your own time!

Sew-Along Youtube Tutorials

Pacific Northwest Life Quilt KIT Lamb Farm Designs

Finished Quilt Size: 60 x 72

Difficulty Level

This quilt is suitable for confident beginner to intermediate quilters and up. If your cutting is accurate and you’re comfortable with an accurate quarter-inch, then you should find little that slows you down.

Jennie Lamb’s sizing is extremely accurate with only mild oversizing written into the pattern.

Quick Tip: When you’re first piecing your cuts together, you may worry that the blocks are looking a little wonky, especially the flying geese in the salmon eyes. This is normal! Keep following the pattern and you’ll see that once everything is fully pieced together it will suddenly look a lot better! This is just a little idiosyncrasy of quilts like this, so don’t doubt yourself!

Pay close attention to colors and details

This quilt has a lot going on! Look closely and you'll see multiple different types of trees, raindrops and leaves. Each has specific color and size requirements. Of course you're free to experiment and go off-book to your heart's content (and if you do, we'd LOVE to see your finished designs!) but if you're looking to follow the pattern exactly, here is a quick breakdown of the three main issues to look out for.

Raindrops

There are four colors for raindrops: Powder Blue, Sky Blue, Aqua and Grey.

Falling Leaves

Falling leaves come in: Orange, Red and Light Red.

Douglas Fir vs. Tall Pine

For trees you have: Light Green, Dark Green, Bright Green and Medium Green. The Douglas Firs and the Tall Pines will look more or less identical, save for the trunks. Douglas Firs have shorter trunks, Tall Pines have the longer ones. The trunks themselves may be Dark Brown or Dark Tan.

Junipers

These are the tiny trees, and they come in all four green shades, as well (Light Green, Dark Green, Bright Green and Medium Green). They also have two different shades of trunk color: Dark Tan and Medium Brown.

Remember that if you do decide to not follow colors exactly, this may alter how much of each color fabric you need to complete the quilt.

Can I join the sew-along late?

Of course! We’re happy to have you join us, even if you hopped on board a little late. The previous weeks’ tutorial videos will be available on our Youtube playlist for as long as you need them (even if that’s long after the sew-along is finished!).

Depending on how late you start, you may be able to catch up (one week every month is set aside specifically for catching up!) but even if you’re behind, you’ll still find community and a lot of fun.

If you’d like to chat with other quilters working on the Pacific Northwest Life Quilt, be sure to join our private Facebook group. Share progress photos, ask questions and just generally have a fun time!
